The Cisco VPN Client on Mac OS X systems must be uninstalled by running a script via a terminal window. This may be useful to you, particularly if you now wish to use the built-in VPN client for OSX ( http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/vpn/pptp/docs/macosx.html ):

When I use Cisco's VPN Client 5.0.x for Windows I have no problem with access to all sites. Since I'm setting up Mac Built-In Cisco VPN client (for instance similar to wiki.mcs.anl.gov) I get troubles with some sites. After I press 'Connect' button the system.log shows following:. Cisco has developed the AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client as a 'next generation' Virtual Private Network (VPN) client. Most recent client available is anyconnect-macosx-i386-4.0.00061-k9.pkg. Please follow the instructions below:

1. Navigate to the following: Mac Hard Drive → Applications → Utilities
2. Start the ‘Terminal' application.
3. Paste the following command into the Terminal window and hit enter:

sudo /opt/cisco-vpnclient/bin/vpn_uninstall

4. Follow the instructions to remove the VPN Client and close the terminal
application when it has finished.

NOTE: You will need have the admin password for your computer in order to run the script.

The above path is incorrect here are the correct instructions from Cisco's web site;

The VPN Client uninstall script uninstalls any previous command-line or GUI version of the VPN Client from your workstation.

To uninstall the VPN Client for Mac OS X

Step 1 Open a terminal window.

Step 2 Run the following command:

sudo /usr/local/bin/vpn_uninstall
Step 3 Enter your password

Step 4 You are prompted to remove all profiles and certificates.

If you answer yes, all binaries, startup scripts, certificates, profiles, and any directories that were created during the installation process are removed.
If you answer no, all binaries and startup scripts are removed, but certificates, profiles, and the vpnclient.ini file remain.

NOTE: The instructions may not be current. Please visit https://credentials.anl.gov/VPN/ for the latest.

As an alternative to downloading the Cisco VPN client for Mac OS X, you can also use the built in IPSec version found on your machine. This might be more convenient for those who wish to avoid installing additional software.

You will need an ANL Domain Account in order to access the VPN.

1. Head over to your System Preferences and to the Network Settings.

2. Add a New interface.


3. Input the following settings:
Interface: VPN
VPN Type: Cisco IPSec
Service Name: This can be anything, I left the default.


4. Edit the new interface details as follows:
Server Address: vpn.anl.gov
Account Name: This is your ANL Domain Username.
Password: Leave this blank, it will prompt you later when connecting.


5. Click on the Authentication Settings... button as shown above.
Both the Shared Secret and Group Name should be entered as: ipsec


Hit OK and now you should be able to press Connect. This will prompt you for your password and after a successful authentication, you will now be connected to the ANL VPN.

You can also check the Show VPN Status in Menu Bar box for easier access later.
